The rules for the patent office really need to be changed back to, "If in doubt, no patent", instead of the current policy of issuing patents if there is some doubt. The stated theory is that the courts will decide if a patent is valid. The practice is that the courts find in favour of the patent holder, because they have a patent. This is not an open source issue. This is an issue affecting all software development. I allocate the impending death of RIM to the bogus patent case that cost the company billions. That was money that would have gone into R&D. Instead it paid a patent troll. The bigger problem is that the US is trying to push its broken patent system on the rest of the world. Ian
