Barry explained sufficiently. Though, as Lewis mentioned, since
diskutil info accepts file system paths (such as /), all of this is
overkill. (Thanks again, Lewis.)

So, instead use:

# diskutil info / | grep "File System"

   File System Personality:  Journaled HFS+
