Sorry for bumping an old thread, but for the archive...
I have a very short bash script here which uses gs and
imagemagick which creates a "meme", an image superposed
with specified text, which was the larger goal of the
file-reading sub-task.
It takes arguments from the command-line, but the technique
should be readily adaptable to other configurations.

Incidentally, the small file-slurping example I posted
in this thread (which I believe Cecil eventually used)
exhibits the same stackoverflow potential that is solved
