That branch of the family only goes back to the early 1800s, though of course the family has always been here. "Mourning Dove" was maybe the first native woman to have a novel published, though there is some debate. But she wrote an autobiography, in the early 1900s but not published till 20 or 30 years ago. She mentions my family, "the Timentwas never trusted white people after their daughter moved away", which has to be when they moved to the Red River Colony (what became Winnipeg, Manitoba). I can't help but think that was put in the book because my great, great, great grandfather was known at the time, having written some books, including about the early days of the fur trade in the pacific northwest.
