The store has changed hands, but it's been there since the early eighties, at least. So I suppose they just kept it "in case". But I was surprised that they could find it, let alone that they still had it around. It was the first time in a very long time that I'd seen them. I remember when they were so novel, going to the department store in the sixties with my mother, she'd use the department store's credit card, something not uncommon at the time but preceeding the common use of general credit cards. One used bookstore closed here, and among the books and other junk they left outside for the garbage (I found a small monitor) was was the gizmo for reading the cards. That's the shift, it can now be thrown out. I wasn't even sure if they owned it, or they should have returned it to the card company. I'm not even sure what the reader entails, there was a mini-DIN plug on it (as seen on Macintoshes at one point), so I wasn't sure if it fitted into a general system or needed some other card company device.
