That's some of the split.

"In the old days" access was limited, and you'd always go through someone 
who'd give you some basics, or hand you "Zen and the Art of the Internet" 
or "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Internet" or one of those.  Or you'd 
alread read the book.  And of course, going back far enough, the software 
ran at your "ISP" so they could configure it for you.  When I first had 
full internet access, it was late, in 1996, they even had the local 
newsgroup, the local to the "ISP" newsgroup, the one with the FAQs, and so 
on, already subscribed to.

But people come other ways now.  I never heard about "myspace" or 
"facebook" until they were well on their way, so they seemed to vector 
across personal contact (maybe even off internet).  I think that's 
generally what happened, after a certain point, the mass was in a 
different place, and their vison of the internet was different, and they 
passed that on to their friends, who then got online.

Now people can get online without even logging in somewhere, or at lesat 
in a much vaguer sense.  In the modem days, you had to have your own 
account, now you can just plug in to some wifi point.  So unlike the old 
days, there's no entry path.
