Yes, as I said, my Sony (Z1 Compact on Android 5.1.1) can do that. I'd 
regard the fact that the airplane icon (denoting airplane mode) remains 
visible after the WiFi is turned back on as a bug, though. If selecting 
airplane mode turns the WiFi off then turning the WiFi on again should 
mean that you're no longer in airplane mode.

Airplane mode historically means "no radios transmitting" (regardless 
of the fact that airlines no longer require this state except at 
take-off and landing), and it's useful to have a term for that state.

.. and, back to the original point, if WiFi is on then obviously WiFi 
will be using the battery. The fact that one has previously selected 
airplane mode doesn't alter that.
