To be accurate, the POSIX standard was derived from David Korn's ksh, which
was a significant improvement on Steven Bourne's original shell, and significantly
more robust than the contemporaneous BSD C shell (which was not compatible with
the original bourne shell at all).

Bash is a mix of POSIX and GNU extensions, but for me, ksh is more useful
(particuarly around floating arithmetic).

e.g.

$ printf '%f\n' $(( 1.8 * 3.1415926 ))
5.654867
