Normally you extend library functionality by wrapping functions and adding code elsewhere. Directly modifying library code is generally considered the domain for people with a degree of expertise which some of your initial question makes me think you may not have. Afterall, what are you going to do when the next version of sqlite comes out to fix bugs and add features. If you have changes tangled up in it, it becomes a LOT of work to perform the update.
