I rebooted, and found that k3b still suffers from the lag. Which apparently messes with its mind. In 2 different dvd writers in this machine, I was not able to burn the unzipped .iso into a bootable dvd+rw disk. I finally used dd to put it on a 32G usb key which worked, 32 gigs of ram is all good. And after the reboot, t-bird is unable to save the draft again. But this is the first time I have booted anything from usb! That is a huge advantage. So I'll see if a netinstall will boot from a key.
