The question would therefore be how to have the backup copy without resulting in this update-initramfs failure happening. About the only possibility I can think of would be to *also* copy the respective underlying files, so that they are available under the name update-initramfs expects to see. That would probably make the backup - and the process of creating it - noticeably more unwieldy, however.
