I think his main point is that he does not think the extremism is uncommon
for Muslims. Which while there is a frighteningly high percent who back the
violence in polls, it is still only a tiny fraction which engage in it.

So, yeah, it is the extremists.

And we have plenty in the US, too - like this who backed Bush's war on Iraq,
which Bush claimed was done in the name of the Christian deity.

Absolutely correct. And those like Bush who overthrew Iraq and then engaged
in useless torture policies which were clearly war crimes. And just as many
Muslims defend their extremists, many Christians defend such actions.
