AFAIK there are at least these components involved:

 * Kernel
 * Proprietary graphics driver (kernel- and userspace parts, NVidia)
 * Mesa (userspace)

I am not sure how much "cooperation" from the X server itself is required  
i.e. if it might be enough to build a newer Mesa but keep running an old X 
server.
