That should have been /dev/sda, but since you said the installer booted 
and started, I assume it's just a typo.

Try the installer with non-free firmware, pretty much all Wi-Fi cards 
require non-free firmware: 
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/
