Possibly there is some (non free) firmware missing for your GPU, but to find out which, and where to get it, people here need to know more. Some more details out of your Xorg.*.log would also be very helpful. Help us to help you :) Are you comfortable with a Linux console? Can you switch into one (CTRL-ALT-F1, for example) and enter commands there? This would also ease things. Cheers - tomás
