I and most people I know almost never use our optical media. I use thumb drives for sneaker net. I do produce DVDs, though, so when I am making those I need my DVD burner to test things and to make a master to send to the folks who produce them in bulk - but that is an edge case. Most people never have that need. > People DO prefer online media, but I don't believing that any one of > those people will find the omission of an optical drive to be > liberating. Liberating? It is not needed... but not sure why you would think it is "liberating"? Odd word for the removal of something few use. > The way Apple removed not only the optical drives but also > certain ports people came to rely on is ridiculous. And if Apple included a bunch of stuff people did not need you would whine they included it just to jack up the price. > Maybe they DO buy all of their media from iTunes Woah. Where did you get that? I do not use my optical drive but I use a lot more than just iTunes. You are getting yourself all confused and thinking you need an optical drive or you will be forced to use iTunes. > , but maybe they found a good deal for a CD or DVD they've been looking for > all of their lives and would have appreciated to be able to rip it. And maybe they found an old printer with a parallel port. Should Apple include that, too? > Call me old school but I enjoy having a plethora of ports on my laptop > to make sure that I'm equipped no matter what the situation is. I can understand thinking Apple removes things too quickly - but I also think history has shown them to be *generally* right. When they removed the floppy before thumb drives were common and before they had writable CD capabilities I thought that was a bit silly. No good "sneaker net" solution. -- * Mint MATE: Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint / LibreOffice: <http://youtu.be/USU9iqppfto> * Win 8 / Word 2013: <http://youtu.be/z8gUL2TCcV4> * Mavericks / Pages 5.1: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk>
