Memory limited. You can have arrays of strings, which means that the limited number of identifiers is irrelevant to how many total strings there can be. Question that is tangential to this: Is there a limit on the number of strings Applesoft can handle, aside from a memory one? 256 max strings? i.e. if LOMEM was set to something ridiculous so that Applesoft had ~32K available, is there a hard limit to the number of strings or is strictly memory limited? Since variables only use the first 2 characters of the identifiers: a) What are valid identifier names? b) The first letter has to be an uppercase or lowercase letter, right? c) Let's assume you can use the characters $40 .. $7F which is around $40 choices for the first character of the identifier. Ignoring that you can use numbers for the second character of the identifier, does this mean Applesoft can process $40 * $40 = $1000 strings? I probably should re-read this consolidated Applesoft disassembly again to see where/how strings are handled ... http://jamtronix.com/files/applesoft.html
