Cucom (remember them?) had the faster VAXen on a very restrictive distribution list. Then one showed up behind the iron curtain. The US spooks got a little panicked, and decided to send out teams to actually verify that the few hundred ones that were shipped to allies were, indeed, in place as the paperwork said. Good theory, but they didn't count on corporate security. Which was intense for the ~6 or so VAXen in a mountain bunker somewhere in Norway, computing something which was Very Secret Indeed. But not military grade, probably some commercial stuff regarding locating the oil within a field. Guarded very thuroghly by corporate security. They wouldn't even publicly admit to having them. So the US spook showed up at the corporate headquarters, and were given a polite reception, where eyebrows were lifted substantially when they explained their mission. And, did I mention, they weren't showing any ID, they just had very nice suits. That didn't go down well with the corporate spooks. They were firmly, but politely shown the door. The company wouldn't even confirm or deny that they actually HAD then VAXen in question. Which made the US spooks extra nervous. This escalated very quickly. It ended with the US ambassador having to go visit the site in person. This was the level of officialdom required for the company spooks to lift some part of their veil. Of course the US couldn't sign any NDAs either, much less the extreme kind required for such a visit. The case did hit the desk of very senior politicians on both sides. And the VAXen were happily consuming power and emitting heat down in that mountain. -- mrr
