Your further advice would be appreciated. In Newegg, Amazon, and EBay I
was unable to find an external or internal drive that specified
region. In fact, I didn't even know that the region spec was built into
drives rather than players.

I'd really like to replace my present ASUS drive because there is
usually a brief gap in the sound out near beginning of CDs that I'm told
is probably because it is too fast (24X)

Interesting. Again, I'm betrayed by my ignorance. Since I happen to have
an ASUS internal drive, I went to the ASUS website, where there is
nothing about downloading firmware.

In snooping about I discovered there is a linux application, regionset,
which lets you show and display the region of a drive. I've not tried it
yet, but this sounds like a very simple solution to my problem.
