C implementations are generally free to produce 'equivalent code', meaning, code which isn't a literal translation of a sequence of C expressions into the corresponding machine code sequences but into some other machine code sequences which happen to produce the same result, cf An actual implementation need not evaluate part of an expression if it can deduce that its value is not used and that no needed side effects are produced In the addition example I gave (*b + *b + *b + *b) the values which could be obtained by evualuating the three trailing *b expressions are not used and neither do they produce any side effects. Possibly, even the value of the first *b is never used, eg, when a statement a la *b = c; preceded it. And a volatile qualifier is supposed to inform a C implementation that these relaxed expression evaluation rules should be suspended in some particular context. All of this happens purely at the C language level.
