scanf returns the number of items it was able to read. In this case, if
it returns 1 then a number will have ben stored in `delay`; otherwise
there was some kind of error (perhaps the user typing "help").
Which is not to say that scanf is a particularly good way to read
numeric input, but it's probably good enough for simple programs that
don't have to be robust in the presence of bad input.
