James said a lot of things, all of which look fine to me. What thing in
particular is he wrong about in your opinion?
Upthread (now lost) you said that adding one was to deal with negative
numbers, but that's not true. It is simply how you convert a fractional
change to a rate of growth (in maths as well as in finance). You would
do this for positive changes (profits up 50% is a growth rate of 1.5) as
well as for negative changes (a 25% drop in profits is growth rate of
0.75).
As it happens, your code does not compute the geometric mean when either
of the numbers is negative because you test for that and return the
arithmetic mean in that case (and that may be reasonable). What's more
peculiar is that your code adds one to individual numbers that are < 1,
not to either both or to neither. I can't see any justification for
that. If you are working with changes you must add one to both numbers
(and subtract 1 from the final mean). If you are working with rates,
you must not subtract 1 from either number.
In short, (and to get topical) there are three calculations that you
might need to use in various situations:
double arith_mean(double a, double b) { return (a + b)/2; }
double geom_mean(double a, double b) { return sqrt(a * b); }
double mean_of_changes(double a, double b) { return sqrt((a+1) * (b+1)) - 1; }
Your function calculated this:
if (a < 0 || b < 0)
return arith_mean(a, b);
else if (a < 1 && b < 1)
return mean_of_changes(a, b) + 1;
else if (a < 1)
return geom_mean(a + 1, b);
else if (b < 1)
return geom_mean(a, b + 1);
else
return geom_mean(a, b);
As you can see, in three of the five cases, your function does not
calculate one of the usual functions.
