Of course full duplex was (sometimes) needed even in the early days of
Forth. People paid good money for full-duplex terminals and modems for
the precise reason that they wanted to use both directions at once.

I guess I still don't understand what was really saved by limiting it to
half duplex. The application I mentioned earlier that I coded to handle
full duplex: I don't know if it even used the full duplex. Being able
to handle full duplex from the beginning meant one less thing I had to
think about while writing the rest of the application.

It never occurred to me to do it half-duplex-only so I can only
speculate on whether it would have been simpler. I can say that I had a
general API where you'd say "open a new channel" and it would launch two
threads, set up named mailboxes, etc. The two threads were very simple,
something like:

   def transmit(mailbox, port):
      while True:
         read data (blocking) from mailbox
         write data (blocking) to port

   def receive(mailbox, port):
      while True:
         read data (blocking) from port
         write data (generally non-blocking) to mailbox

That's sort of like factoring in Forth, I would have thought. Separate
out the two functions instead of trying to combine them into one more
complicated thing.
