Use vacuum tubes! They're smaller and consume so much less electricity. ;-) But serious, since also car manufacturers are hit hard by the shortage, some could build a fab and only provide chips and other components for their own if there is another problem in the future. In the meantime selling chips (overpriced, that it makes sense from the economical point of view) to competitors.
