Sorry for the delated response. I now no longer have the problem because
I made user owner of the mount point for the external device, even
though I had the impression this not supposed to be done.

I also have the impression that the use of uid and gid in the fstab line
is only for NTFS, not for EXT3. I suspect using them for EXT3 is why
user had trouble writting to the device.
