At least one pre-ANSI C compiler (pcc) accepts this code.

ANSI C includes the wording:
"An identifier declared as a typedef name shall not be redeclared as a
parameter."
in 3.7.1. The corresponding text in the reference manual at the end of
K&R1 is missing, so I think this was a deliberate change designed to
facilitate parsing of new-style function declarations and definitions.
