Take care. This may result in no terminating null (and it wastes time
filling with zeros). If you want a string (as you seem to since you
test with strcmp not strncmp) use the proper string function to copy
the data about as you do 7 lines up.

The type is wrong, that's all. You want
int iteminarray(char (*arr)[20], int size, char *theval)
I won't explain more because other have done so already, but I'm happy
to if need be.
