I don't recall any time when relying free leaving the data alone would
be considered elegant. Even on those systems where it worked, I'd call
it a hack, and hacks are rarely elegant.
(Also worth saying that "modern C", where this is not allowed, means C
for at least the last quarter of a century.)

I wouldn't call it elegant, but elegance is probably too personal to be
worth arguing over. This:
void freelist(node *list, node *prev)
{
free(prev);
if (list) freelist(list->next, list);
}
(called as freelist(l, 0);) has the merit of being efficient (on good
compilers), but I doubt it would pass as elegant in C.
