Yes, and this can be explained, among other things, by the fact that it had
been an evolutionary advantage for humans to ascribe purpose to the natural
world. As a result, during the last 10'000 years if human history, there
have been about a thousand gods of lightning, fire, rain, soil, and so on.

Yesterday I have watched the Intelligence² debate, “Science refutes God”
(Krauss + Shermer in favor vs. D'Souza + Hutchinson against the motion;
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7vEB6FXtbs>; Krauss + Shermer won, i.e.
made more of the audience change their mind towards their position).

There an argument that I found very convincing was made by Michael Shermer
(Founder, Skeptics Society and Skeptic Magazine; columnist in “Scientific
American”): The humans that have survived are those that made type-1
cognition errors: thinking that something was there even though there was
not; because if it had been the other way around, there could have been a
predator gone unnoticed, and the human in question would have been killed
instead, failing to procreate.

So humans are hard-wired to see purpose in everything, to believe in things
that are not there – which was again humorously referred to by Lawrence
Krauss (Cosmologist, Author; Founder and Director of the Origins Project,
ASU), quoting X-Files’ Agent Mulder’s “I want to believe” –; but they are
also endowed with reason to overcome that prehistoric instinct.

> Any particular creation story, even the Big Bang, are not
> believed by any majority, though often large minorities.

Barring statistical evidence for it, I disagree with that claim as a whole.
I also disagree with the way it is worded:

The Big Bang theory is _not_ a “creation story”, it is a scientific theory;
it is _not_ to be equated with religious beliefs that there was or is a
supreme or even supernatural being that created the universe/world. It is
only that some religious people who believe in such a creation myth want you
to think otherwise. Note that even Lemaître, a Belgian Catholic priest
*and* scientist, famously *resented* Pope Pius ⅩⅠⅠ’s claiming in his
Encyclical that with Lemaître’s Big Bang theory confirmed also Genesis had
been confirmed and Catholicism had been validated.

Because *different* to creation myths, and *different* to religious belief,
there is not only the mathematics of general relativity and quantum
mechanics that tells us that it is very likely that there was a Big Bang as
it is now understood, and that there was inflation afterwards, but there is
also *hard* *empirical* *evidence* of it: namely, universal expansion and
the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation. And the advanced gravitational
wave astronomy, which has once again confirmed general relativity, should
make us able to look even farther into the past, even back to nanoseconds
after the Big Bang, and *observe* what spacetime looked like back then.

Since I do not know where this discussion belongs most, F'up2
<news:sci.physics.relativity> where I became aware of it.
