I will say this much: I will gladly pay for AppleCare since I have 
already spilled coffee on a 2017 MacBook Air, killed my gaming laptop 
doing a battery replacement (this happens to a lot of people with the 
unit I owned) and had a keyboard become defective. At this point, even 
if a manufacturer were to try to sell me a device with a 
user-replaceable battery, I would rather have a skilled technician do it 
since the days of simply pulling the old one out and putting a new one 
in are long gone.
