Admittedly, Apple's approach to owning music back then was an absolute 
nightmare. I recall the difficulty of copying music back to the desktop 
after you've reinstalled or something. You needed specialized software 
to do it, because Apple presumably felt that you were pirating music if 
you were copying your own stuff back to your computer. Nowadays, with 
people using subscriptions for their music, the problem no longer 
exists. However, if you're still staying away from such services and 
want to rip CDs you already own, Apple still makes it needlessly 
complicated on the PC to transfer over to an iPhone. I haven't tried it 
on the Mac, but I imagine that it's not much better. They're truly 
pushing you toward a subscription to Apple Music.
