I understand the sentiment, but I think it's a highly impractical idea. Of course, I thought Mono was a highly impractical idea when they first started out. Trying to duplicate the technology of a company which is dedicated to making its stuff so complicated that only they can produce and sell compatible stuff is an exercise in futility. Which means that, if you did fork Mono, you'd soon end up either stuck in a niche of history or sponsored by Microsoft.
