Oh, the Waymo blog -- that will certainly be an unbiased source of information. The article I read actually cited Waymo, saying they reported a couple of low-speed collisions with other cars, and judged them to be the fault of the human drivers who didn't anticipate the self-driving car would strictly follow the rules. The article goes on to suggest people will have to watch out for self-driving vehicles. (Unfortunately, this was before I started clipping and saving this stuff.) That the Waymo engineers are making the change mentioned above means they recognize this is a problem, so it's a fact, not an urban legend. Although there are far more ways than speed limits that human drivers bend or break the regulations. It certainly is. Every driver is constantly making judgements about what the other road users are going to do, even if they're not doing so consciously. If self-driving vehicles are on the road with me, I need to anticipate how they will drive and what actions they are likely to take.
