Well, yes, that's implied by my statement "This requires that you do the
end-of-line marking yourself". Your point is?

I know that on some systems, when working on files with fixed record
sizes, the end of a line is indicated by the fact that the parts of the
block that are after the end of the line are padded with blank or null
characters - which is why the standard doesn't guarantee that blanks
written at the end of a line will be there when the line is read back
in. All such blanks can be dropped on input, whether they were the
result of explicit output or just padding. Is something like that
approach used?

If you do in fact have any idea how line lengths are conventionally
determined on this platform, please explain. If you don't know, say so.
And please use the term "line length" or "end of line" in your response
so that it's clear that you are actually responding to my request,
rather than merely doing another info dump.

So, do you have any reason to believe that fputc('\n') to a text file
would fail to produce exactly the same kind of line boundary? If so,
what it that reason?
And, while I hate to have to repeat myself, but you've repeatedly
avoided answering this question: how would that line boundary be indicated?
