In Intel and AMD parlance aligned stores are atomic. They are either seen to be done, or not done. Never half way done. But, they may not be seen to be done by all people at the same time, or even virtual notion of time. -- By the way: there have been systems where RMW (atomic load/stores) may also not be ordered. IIRC Itanium.
