Possibly including > x86 or ARM. I posted too soon: there is one reason. The present generation of GPUs with SIMD/SIMT/coherent threading rely on annotations or indications in the instruction stream wrt control flow: IF-THEN-ELSEIF-ELSE-ENDIF, BEGIN/END-LOOP, etc. This directs the controller to push/pop/exchange IPs and masks of selected processors on the single, interleaved, stack. To do this coherent threading on a vanilla x86 or ARM ISA would require fairly complex mechanisms to deduce where these annotations should be. I know this from experience: these are exactly the sort of annotations that you need to do control independence optimizations, such as Haitham Akkary's DMT with fork loop bodies or fork after loop. But adding these annotations would not be so hard to x86, at least, which already has extension bytes out the wazoo. I am not so sure about ARM, but I note that Fujitsu added extensions (not bytes, but whole instruction word extensions) to SPARC.
