The first plane impact on the WTC towers registered 0.9 Richter scale, the second registered 0.7 Richter scale. That's what people initially felt. The collapses registered 2.1 and 2.3 Richter scale. The fact that the corner of the building didn't collapse is a result of an uncontrolled fall of the building... this can be seen here: <http://pop.h-cdn.co/assets/cm/15/06/54cfc90212f36_-_911-south-tower-collapse.jpg> That looks like a plane flew into one side of the building, and it collapsed sort of sideways, dragging the building down with it because the plane had sliced into a vertical utility column that led all the way down to the basement, dumping burning jet fuel down that utility column which weakened the structural integrity of the building. You'll note there wasn't any melted steel in the rubble, it was a yellowish color, which is indicative of it being about 1500 degrees F... or weren't you aware that before there were pyrometers, metal workers judged the temperature of steel by its incandescence? The highest-quality steel used in the WTC towers would have a melting point of about 2750 F. It didn't melt, but at 2200 F, it would have lost much of its strength, more than enough to trigger a collapse. Steel starts losing its strength above 1000 F. You'll also note the black smoke emanating from the towers prior to their collapse is indicative of an oxygen-starved, fuel-rich fire, so it likely didn't reach much more than 2200 degrees, even with all the other fuel in the office spaces. Did you know the WTC towers used 12 different grades of steel, including A36, which is barely steel... it'd be better described as "slightly carboned iron". That's what caused the small iron spheres found after the collapse, and the liquid metal pouring out of the buildings... the carbon burned off, leaving behind just iron... with a melting point of 2200 F. Did you know they used a never-before-tried and thus untested construction technique of lightweight truss frame members around a central support column to give a more open floorspace, thus more than an acre of floorspace on each floor was unsupported by vertical support columns? Did you know that when the planes slammed into the building, *because* they used lightweight truss frame members around a central support column, there wasn't much there to slow the plane, so it slammed into the central support column, knocking that fluffy spray-on fireproofing off and allowing the heat to weaken the steel? Did you know that in the top floors, the structural steel was as thin as 0.25" thick (and it was only 4" thick at the base of the building)? They thought this would be strong enough to hold the weight if the buildings were hit with a B-707 (which would have had more kinetic energy than a 767 because they were approximately the same weight, but the 707 flew faster), but they used calculations based upon conventional grid-constructed buildings. They failed to account for their new central column with lightweight truss frame construction technique. Did you know that videos of the North Tower collapse show the communications mast falling first, indicative of that thin upper-floor central-column structural steel collapsing under the weight of the building due to losing its strength in the heat of the fire? The falling weight of the upper floors then successively collapsed the weakened central column, which had been soaked in burning jet fuel and thus weakened. Did you know the jet fuel dumped into those buildings had a higher energy content than the gravitational potential energy released during the tower collapses? The jet fuel contained ~10^12 joules of energy per tower, the tower collapses each released ~10^11 joules of energy. Did you know the WTCs were exempted from city fire codes at the time of their construction because of a change in federal regulations prohibiting the further use of asbestos? Did you know the WTC structural fireproofing insulation was the inadequate fluffy spray-on stuff above the 78th floor because federal regulations changed and prohibited the use of asbestos (which was used below the 78th floor), rather than concrete and plaster or asbestos? Did you know that the Empire State Building had a similar disaster in 1945... a B-25 loaded with fuel slammed into it between the 78th and 79th floors, the fire burned for 24 hours (much longer than the 56 minutes and 104 minutes of the WTC fires) yet the building remained standing because it used conventional grid construction technique and concrete, plaster and asbestos fireproofing?
