I said the type of the name 'x', not the contents of the location it
refers to. Suppose my 'double x' declaration was represented by this
assembly sequence:
x:
resb 8 # reserve 8 bytes
What would be the type, in C terms, of the address designated by label
x? What would be the type, in C terms, of the contents of those 8 bytes
it refers to?
The definition `double x;` does

And yet, &x and &pi both yield a double* pointer. What does that tell
you about about x and pi? The pi is supposed to be a replacement for
writing 3.14159... all over your code.

I've been implementing this stuff most of my life. You can't do that
without having some inkling of how it has to work.
And I can tell you that my named constant feature (it's not really a
proposal as that's never going to happen) is simpler and works much
better than any near equivalent that C has.
