Veterans of the 1401 told me they felt the CKD arrangement was superior to that of the fixed sectors of the 1401. More efficient use of scarce space. Well into the 390 era disk space was expensive and allocations had to be carefully considered. Today, of course, disk is cheap and we can be sloppy.
