In the sense that all that we say that “takes place” only takes place *for an observer*, or – as Einstein later put it – “[a]ll our thoughts and concepts are called up by sense-experiences and have a meaning only in reference to these sense-experiences” [1]. If one *observes* something to be shorter, then it *is* shorter *for oneself*. It has been shown time and time again that objects that are moving relative to the observer *are* observed by them to be shorter than when they are at rest relative to them. This effect is called “length contraction”.
