If doSomething() were defined in such a fashion that it does not retain
a copy of the passed-in pointer after it exits, nor cause the data
identified by the pointer to be written, in what way would the semantics
of the form using the const array differ from that of the form using the
compound initializer? If the semantics would be identical in that use
case, in what way would use of the const array form be "cheating"?

It would be possible to write a doSomething() function which would cause
the behavior of the two forms to be different, but would you expect that
to be the case even 50% of the time? If not, that would suggest that in
the majority of use cases for constructs like the above, code using the
compound literal syntax would be slower than code that achieved identical
behavior using a separately-declared object of static duration.
