That used to be the FON network, then it got slurped up by BT, now
BT/EE. I'm probably five or six mergers behind.

Mine was so old it had a FON.com identity. I allowed 25% of my
bandwidth to be used by the public and I was then allowed to use 25%
of any FON router on the planet when I was out travelling.
It was like having my router move with me. Sort of like my own
personal hotspot except their FONs were static and limited.

Yes, but if you don't share then you don't get to share. If you were
a meany, you couldn't use FON routers in New Zealand or England when
roaming about.
It was a community sharing project thingy. So far as I know, it
worked well.

That's not possible. They only get 25% of the cut. They could
monopolise that quarter so that a third party couldn't use your FON
device while visiting relatives nearby but that's just like any hotel,
railway station, bus station or coffee-shop wi-fi. It's the Tragedy Of
The Commons. There's always some greedy, selfish, unthinking shite who
spoils it for everyone.
Like the arseholes who take fifty boxes of cereal from Food Banks.
Oh, and just to assuage some worries, they would be using *your*
router to download their porn but *their* userid. You wouldn't be
culpable. And you could always restrict their access.

It still works? Cool.

Had she had a FON router, and had he had one, too, they could both
have shared each other's FON 25% of their bandwidths, though, as
neighbours, that would have been idiotic.
Had he stolen her FON without having his own FON it would have been
the same as the original case, just with FON in the middle. He would
still have been a thief.
FON was cool.
