I'd swap out the hard drive before doing that, since OS X is too valuable to lose, but Apple should realize that its users have that option, loath as they may be to take it - and, *given* that fact, they should be supportive of their customers with older machines. Because they have lots of alternatives that are far and away cheaper than running out and buying a new Mac. John Savard
