it's not well designed. it's an all or nothing.

at a minimum, it could not install iphone apps on an ipad. 

what would work a lot better is by choosing which devices get the apps.

wifi sync always worked well for me. it's obviously going to be slower
than with usb, but it's a lot more convenient.

i've never seen it take more than 30 seconds to find the device, and
that's when the device is sleeping. if it's unlocked and at a home
screen, it's fairly fast.
