usually this happens if wifi sync is initiated from the device. it's
more reliable if it is initiated from itunes.

i have that off because it can sometimes be a problem. 

it's not unusual that a developer will release an update, only to find
that it crashes on some devices, and then they must scramble to release
another update to fix it. 

this has happened to me on numerous occasions, where i've had a
completely useless app for a week or more because some lazy ass
developer can't be bothered to test their apps. after they fix it, the
release notes will say 'fix crash on some devices' or something
similar.
