It is a common misconception that source code in a scripting language would
be interpreted as it is. Instead, code written for ECMAScript
implementations in browsers, like JavaScript, JScript aso., is compiled into
bytecode or native machine code. Only the bytecode, if that, is then
interpreted/executed by a Virtual Machine (VM). This applies to several
other scripting languages that are not based on ECMAScript, too, for example
PHP and Python. It is therefore wrong to say “interpreted scripting
language”.
