each icon was really a small window with a full backing store (not
compressed either, very stupid). the more visible icons there were, the
more memory was used up and the less there was for actual apps. they
did change it to a compressed backing store at some point. 

this mattered a lot more back when os x first came out and macs shipped
with 64-128 meg of memory and could only be expanded to 640 meg, such
as with the white ibook. still, you had to have a *lot* of icons to
notice a difference.

icons no longer do that so it isn't an issue anymore, but even if they
still did, macs now have substantially more memory and the cpu & gpu
are much faster too..
