that's why it should be automated. 

once set up, the user does not need to anything else for backups to
take place, and the setup can be done by someone other than the
original user if they're confused about what to do.

online backups are a lot safer than anything a home user can ever
possibly do, especially someone whom you describe as technically
illiterate.

if the internet goes off, the backup will resume when it comes back. 

also, many online services will accept a hard drive as the initial
upload and/or send a hard drive in the event a full restore is needed.

that's so the backups aren't altered by mistake.
