If so, you might want to have `extra' not only in the
comparison function but also in the swap function, in order
for example to gather statistics about the number of swap
operations.

I meant avoiding `const' before `extra' for the rare case of
debugging and gathering statistics whereas in actual use
`extra' is very unlikely to change.
