You could try zapping the PRAM by holding down 
"Option"+"Command"+"P"+"R". That should give you a triple start-up 
chime before you release those keys. If there is no response I suspect 
you might have a dead PRAM battery. Those are pretty old computers and 
the time might have come to replace that battery.
